Harassment charges were filed against a woman who posted phony post on Craigslist

Once there was this news about a mom who posted on Myspace an account of a teenage boy and led a young teenage girl to believe that the phony teenage boy hated her and so she committed suicide. It may sound shocking but real and you may think something like that could have alerted everyone not to post phony accounts online but here comes another case, that of a 40 year old woman named Elizabeth Thrasher.

Now, the case for Elizabeth Thrasher is filed as she violated the cyberbullying laws of Missouri. She had posted on Craigslist about a young 17 year old girl and included some of her pictures, cellular phone number and email address claiming that she wants to look for a male partner to have some girl-boy fun with. Of course, the girl had received numerous responses which came as a shock to her and she then alerted the cops regarding the post.

Cops were able to track down the poster and it was Elizabeth Thrasher. Elizabeth went to jail but was released after paying $10,000 worth of bond but her case is still pending for a trial and while still waiting for her case, she is banned from using a computer or the internet.

As it turns out, Elizabeth Thrasher is related to the young girl because the teenage girl is actually the daughter of Elizabeth’s ex-husband’s new beau. So it is actually quite obvious what Thrasher’s motive for her actions is. She will be facing a sentence to 4 years in state prison or a year in a county jail or to pay $5,000 fine if ever she is to be found guilty. The cyberbullying law was designed to protect girls and boys under the age of 18 from online attacks of people over the age of 21.

New virus alert by the Red Condor Email security expert

Red Condor had warned email users that there is a new virus circulating nowadays that goes undetected in most anti-virus softwares. The virus is emailed in disguise as a response to an advertisement on Craigslist where it is embedded. Red Condor had detected the virus last August 12 and the virus usually comes as an email with headings such as a reply for a car for sale on the Craigslist website. On the email, it suggests that you click on the images of the car which is also disguised to be on a Picasa album. Once you click the link then you automatically get infected unless your anti-virus software belongs to the 13 out of 41 anti-virus software that could detect it right away.

It is getting harder and harder to detect the latest malicious virus and the only way you could keep yourself virus-free is by avoiding links that would direct you to a different website when you don’t know the sender or the email looks malicious. Even if you know the sender, you should still avoid clicking on links that are unknown to you as some email addresses are also being hacked and it is then used to send the viruses on all its contact list.

Red Condor’s CEO said that companies should act quickly to eliminate potential threats. Anti-virus software is not enough protection nowadays and we should be vigilant in all our clicks. It only takes one click to get your computer infected and the virus could spread like wildfire if it goes undetected.

Craigslist needs help of its volunteers

Craigslist has a volunteer police force which is the site’s primary line of defense. One woman, Martha Bader, is one of the volunteers and when she finds deals on Craigslist that looks a bit too good to be true then she did the right thing and deleted the post. This way, the ad would not trick a person to think that it’s a legitimate offer when in fact it was just to trick them out of their money.

The volunteers would flag posts that looks like scams or inappropriate and when the post gets enough flags from the other volunteers then it gets removed from the site. With a huge site such as Craigslist, even if you set up rules for the posters to follow, it still becomes a never ending challenge as some would still break the rules and scam people.

It is inevitable to find scam posts or spams and inappropriate or vulgar posts being posted on Craigslist and this is when the volunteers come in and it is their job to flag those they see are inappropriate. Without the volunteers, Craigslist would find it hard to detect the legitimate posts from the inappropriate ones.

It was Jim Buckmaster who started the idea of a flagging system that utilizes people power. It became quite a success and now millions of volunteers are checking out the site and flagging the inappropriate posts which is very effective and does not cost the site too.

With the aide of the people-power volunteers, we get to enjoy Craigslist even more. Although there are still some inappropriate ads getting through every once in awhile but it’s already minimized. Without the volunteers, Craigslist could be a scam/spam haven.

Best ad posted this week: In search of an actor to make kids cry

There is an ad posted on Craigslist in search of an actor who would take away their cocker spaniel and be the villain in this father’s life. His deceased aunt has left him and his 2 kids a cocker spaniel and the kids doesn’t want the dog to be given away. He doesn’t want the dog anymore and already found a decent home for it but what he needs now is somebody who would pretend to be a dog walker and would then transport the dog to its new home and come home and tell the kids that their dog named Skittles had broken free from its leash and took off. Of course with this kind of news, the kids would start crying and may even curse or throw things at the actor so the father wants the actor to be prepared for that scene.

What’s great about this job if ever you are interested is that it is worth $500 smackaroons! Yes, that’s $500 for a job that would take just around 2 hours. It’s a great experience for actors, the father said.

Plan to buy a used car? Double check the VIN

There is this online scam for cars where the victims end up losing thousands of their hard-earned money because the scammers are masters and are hard to catch by the police. The modus operandi of the scammers is to sell a stolen car with a fake VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and the unsuspecting buyer would end up receiving a call from DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and giving their recently bought used car as it will be confiscated.

If you won’t check the car’s VIN then you could be fooled off your hard earned cash so it’s best to do your homework before signing a deal or handing the seller your money. The VIN is found in different location on the car such as the dashboard and even on the titles and insurance policies. You have to double check the VIN to make sure of its validity to see if it’s a fake VIN or not. If it is fake then make sure to call the proper authorities and report the seller so he won’t rip other people off of their money.
