Craigslist alternatives: other classified sites

Back in 2006, Craigslist was set to start charging people for each listing they posted. While they decided to go ahead and charge the residents in a few major cities (NYC, San Francisco Bay, Los Angeles, Boston, San Diego, Seattle, Chicago, Portland and Washington D.C.), they decided to keep all other posts free of charge. Because the major appeal of Craigslist comes with the fact it doesn’t cost a thing to participate and utilize the services (in most areas), those who were in fear of the possible fee placement began looking elsewhere for Craigslist alternatives. Here are a few Craigslist alternative sites and information about their format.

CityLeases.com: This website is not as well-rounded as Craigslist. However, it’s an adequate place to search if you are in the market for a residence. It specializes in finding leasing options in all areas of New York. It’s interface is easy to use and it’s information is plentiful. However, leasing is the main objective and there are no others bells and whistles included.

MySpace Classifieds: With millions of people setting up MySpace accounts each year, it’s no wonder many of these users are choosing to utilize the free classifieds area of the site. This free service is a great place to sell or buy items, from the comfort of your own couch.

USFreeAds.com: This site is set up much like Craigslist in terms of organization. It is also free, but gives those who sign up the option of paying a $4.99 fee to upgrade their account. Upgrades allow members to place multiple photos and choose other additional posting options. The site is free otherwise and has local and national areas for posting. It is catered to those wishing to buy or sell items.

DomesticSale.com: This new site is a direct competitor of Craigslist. While the format is not quite as simple, it has a great look to it and offers very similar benefits. It’s a free site which allows users to find merchandise, services, garage sales, vacation information and job postings.

While all of these Craigslist alternatives offer similar services, Craigslist continues to stand out above the rest for several reasons. First, the site’s easy-to-use format is unmatched. Other sites seem to try too hard to make their site attractive. However, the focus has never been beauty at Craigslist. Instead, their site is by far the easiest to use free classified sites on the Web. In addition, the customer service at Craigslist is unmatched. The company is known for their incredible customer service and even if the other competitors also offer great customer service it will be a long time before they will be known for that fact alone.
